Manual lymph drainage is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique specifically designed to reduce lymphoedema. It involves gentle skin shifts, consisting of a ‘pressure phase’ and a ‘pressure-free phase’.
During the pressurised phase, the smallest lymphatic vessels open, allowing lymph to be absorbed. During the no-pressure phase, these vessels close again and the fluid is further drained. This treatment supports the natural removal of proteins and waste products from the tissue, something the blood circulation system cannot do on its own.
When these proteins remain in the tissue, they attract fluid, which can eventually lead to oedema. Lymphatic vessels drain the excess fluid to the large lymph nodes in armpits and groin. After purging, it is absorbed into the bloodstream or excreted through the urine.
A slight reduction in oedema is often noticeable after just one treatment. For lasting results, several sessions are recommended.
